What Does a Funeral Celebrant Do?

When someone dies, one of the first questions families face is: who leads the ceremony? A funeral celebrant is an alternative to a religious service — someone who creates a ceremony shaped entirely around your loved one's life, values and personality, rather than a fixed religious structure.

As an independent celebrant, my process usually starts with a home or Zoom meeting, where I simply listen. I want to hear the stories, the humour, the quirks — the things that made your person them. From there, I write a script, share it with you to edit until it feels right, and stay in contact right up to the day itself.

On the day, I arrive early, liaise with the funeral team, and I'm there quietly in case anyone changes their mind about speaking. My goal is always the same: to give your family space to grieve while also celebrating a life that was genuinely, joyfully lived.
